The Joy of Reason

Tuesday Mar 20, 2012
This weekend is the Reason Rally in Washington DC. I won’t be going, but I wish I could.
Supporters of the use of reason and logic in solving our problems will descend on Washington DC to say, hey, you know, instead of theology, maybe we could base our public policy on reason.
It’s a thought.
Why do we Humanists care so much about reason anyway?
Because, we actually want to solve our problems.
And to solve our problems we need to know what is really happening as opposed to what we think might be happening.
And the way we tell the difference between the real and the imagined is by using reason, science and logic.
Because reality matters, reason matters.

What If ...

What if everyone had being the best most ethical person they could be as their goal?
When I do trainings on ethics, people get really excited.
They can see how being a good person benefits them and helps make them a happier person.
But they get frustrated that so few people make being ethical a priority.
I have to admit, it would be really nice if everyone was ethical, compassionate and responsible.
But one really important aspect of Humanism is that it is reality based.
And the reality is: not everyone is wonderful.
That shouldn’t stop you from being the ethical person you know you should be.
Humanism is a choice.
It is a choice to live your life the way you know you should be living it.
Regardless of what other people are doing or saying.
You will feel good knowing that you are doing the right thing.
Plus, you will be doing your part to add a little less misery and little more happiness to the world.
