Lost your religion?
Do you keep your old ethics? Or adopt new ones?
Can you still celebrate the old holidays? Or not?
Lots of people, when they become disenchanted with the religion they grew up with transition to non-belief without any problem at all.
Others struggle for a bit to define who they are now that they are no longer religious.
The good news is you don’t have to invent an ethics from scratch.
You can learn from what other non-religious have figured out about what works and what doesn’t.
One of the reasons I teach people about Humanism is that it provides an ethical framework without dogma and without supernatural belief.
It’s the best of what we have learned so far and what we continue to learn about what it means to be a good human.
Most people end up at some form of Humanism.
Lost your religion? Save yourself some time, and learn about Humanism.
I have several books that might help. Like:

How to Love Someone.
Tuesday Jul 14, 2015
Tuesday Jul 14, 2015
I was watching Star Talk the other day and a scientist, Helen Fisher, was on talking about the love.
Turns out that there are areas of the brain that activate when the brain is experiencing love and affection.
In fact, there are 3 systems that combine to create love.
The sex drive – the drive to reproduce with someone with compatible genes.
The romantic love system – which focuses our attention on 1 person at a time, which presumably helps us figure out how to satisfy the sex drive.
And attachment, which helps us feel secure in the relationship. We all need this.
Love is a combination of sexual drive, romantic focused attention and attachment.
What apparently makes love different from lust is that your attention is focused on one person!
Want to love someone? Focus your attention on them.
Help them feel secure in your presence by being a good ethical person who supports them.
And get with the sexy sexy.

I’ve got a confession to make

God makes no difference to my morality.
This should come as no surprise since I’m a Humanist.
But I thought it was worth saying.
Here’s why.
If a god or gods exist or don’t exist, it doesn’t matter.
I will feel the same way about what is right or wrong.
My morality won’t change.
The only question is whether this god, whoever or whatever it turns out to be, agrees with my morality or not.
If we agree – then it’s all good and god won’t care if I don’t worship it as long as I am a good person.
If not, then that’s not a god I would consider worthy of worship.
Soooo, yeah, I guess that makes me officially apatheistic.
Now you know.

Unreliable Prophesy
Tuesday Dec 23, 2014
Tuesday Dec 23, 2014
I don’t put much stock in prophesy.
I’m not saying people don’t have the gift of sight.
I’m just saying – it doesn’t seem all that reliable.
During high school, I once dreamt that it was going to rain during PE.
And guess what! That was the only period it rained it.
I must be psychic!
My problem is that was the only prophetic dream I’ve ever had.
I’ve had one prophetic dream that wasn’t particularly helpful out of - hundreds of thousands of dreams.
My track record is so lousy as to be totally unreliable.
As I want to solve my problems, I don’t waste my time on things that have been proven to be totally unreliable and basically useless.
Even if on occasion, prophesies do come true.

When I think of how much has changed in my life time I am in awe.
Because then I start thinking about how much civilization has changed in the past few millennium.
